Emerson is the farthest town on our list, about eleven miles northwest of our Kennesaw office in a straight line, in Bartow County. It was incorporated on January 1, 1889, and takes its name from Joseph Emerson Brown, Georgia's governor during the Civil War. Before that it was called Stegall's Station. The census count for 2020 is about 1,400 (Wikipedia gives 1,415, another source 1,455).

How high you are matters more than how far you are

Emerson is the lowest of our towns. It sits at 833 feet, a few feet below Lake Allatoona's 840-foot summer pool, and well below Marietta (1,129), Kennesaw (1,089) and Woodstock (955). That does not put every house at risk. The lake is some distance away, and the town's elevation is a single point. But lots here are closer in elevation to the lake than anywhere else we work, which is why lot elevation, drainage and slope matter.

Flooded crawl space in Emerson from red clay, slope and rain

Houses here are on the Piedmont's red clay, like the rest of the area, and the clay drains slowly. A flooded crawlspace after heavy rain is one of the most common calls. Water gets in through low vents, along the foundation wall and from yards that slope toward the house. We pump, remove wet insulation and dry the dirt and the air. See crawlspace water removal. On steeper lots, water runs fast downhill and collects against the downhill side of the foundation.

Well pump leak water damage, and what private wells change

Some rural and semi-rural properties get their water from a private well instead of a city system. We could not find a published share of private wells for Emerson, so we are only describing what changes if you have one. A well has a pump and a pressure tank, usually in a basement, garage, crawlspace or a well house. A leaking fitting or a failed pressure tank can run for a long time, because the pump keeps refilling the tank. Shut off the pump at its breaker, then the water. A well does not have a city shutoff at the street, so the breaker is your shutoff.

Septic backup cleanup in Bartow County, a different kind of backup

Properties outside sewer service use a septic tank and drain field. When the system fails, wastewater backs up into the lowest drain, or comes up in the yard. That is sewage, category 3. A septic company has to pump and repair the system. We clean and disinfect the house. Heavy, saturated ground after long rain makes drain fields work less well, so septic backups often come after wet weather. See sewage backup cleanup.

Water damage restoration in Emerson, GA and how we get to you

We reach Emerson on I-75 using exits 283 or 285, and on US 41 and GA 293, depending on where you are. The town is also the gateway to Red Top Mountain State Park, which is surrounded by Lake Allatoona, and that is a useful way to give directions. It takes longer to reach than our closer towns. Tell us your address on the call and we will give you an arrival window.

Terrain and runoff on the way to the lake

Emerson is near Lake Allatoona, and the ground in this part of Bartow County is rolling. Water from roofs and driveways runs downhill, toward lower lots and toward the lake and its creeks. If your yard has a path where water clearly runs, anything built in its way, such as a basement door, a window well or a crawlspace vent, takes the water. Downspout extensions and grading fix that, and drainage contractors, not restoration companies, do that work. We tell you what we see.

Manufactured homes and older rural houses

Manufactured homes and older rural houses need a different approach: the floor is often a thin system on a steel frame or short crawlspace, and water lines run in the belly of the house. A leak there can soak insulation that is hard to dry. If you have a manufactured home, call early, because the structure has less margin than a conventionally framed house.

Pressure tank and well house checks

If you have a private well, learn where the pump breaker is and where the pressure tank sits. Look at the tank and the fittings around it once a season for drips and rust. A pump that cycles on and off with no one using water points to a leak somewhere in the house or underground. Turn off the pump at its breaker if you suspect one, and check the lines. A well house is a small building with a pump, a tank and a wire run. A cracked fitting there can flood it and run the pump dry.

What to do about the well after a flood

If flood water covered the wellhead, do not drink the water until the well has been tested. The county health department or a water testing lab can tell you how. Our work stops at the house: we extract and dry what the water touched. The well and the septic system belong to a well contractor and a septic company, and your water may need to be treated before you use it.

Cold nights and well lines

Wells have their own freeze risks. A pressure tank in an unheated shed, a line from the well to the house with shallow cover, or a wellhead pit with no insulation can freeze in a hard cold snap. The result is no water at the tap and, later, a split. Insulate exposed fittings, keep the well house closed and keep a heat source designed for it. The frozen and burst pipe checklist covers the rest.

Common water damage calls in Emerson

Emerson is rural, and the calls reflect that. Many homes use a private well and a septic system, so some of our jobs begin with a well pump leak or a septic backup rather than a city line. Crawlspaces on red clay hold water long after the rain, and manufactured and older rural houses have lines close to the ground.

For well and septic work, a well or septic company handles the system and we handle the water in the house. Tell us which system you have when you call.
